About Rio Grande do Norte
The Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte is one of the great opportunities for international real estate investment. This state, with over 300 sunny days and 400 kilometers of coastline, lies in the northeast part of the country, just above the Amazon Delta. It is the 4th smallest state in country and has a total population of 2.8 million people, with just over 700,000 of those living in the capital of Natal.
The economy of Rio Grande do Norte was centered on agriculture and cattle up until the early 1980s, when the government began to invest heavily in the natural beauty and climate of the coast and the potential for tourism. Tourism is becoming the major economic driver with the miles of undeveloped coastline drawing visitors, investors, retirees and workers. On the northwest coast, centered around the city of Macau, there is also a fair amount of petrochemical development, leading to a diversified economy.
The climate along the coast is one of the main attractions for visitors and investors. The yearly average temperature in Natal is about 27 degrees and sun seems to shine almost every day. Much of the state is fairly dry, although the southern area from Natal down to the border does have a rainy season, from April to June. It rains for a few hours, but the sun still comes out almost every day.
The greatest development and real estate opportunities for investors, both domestic and international ones, are around the city of Natal. The coastline to the north and south of the city is where all the major developments are under construction. With its tropical setting and pristine weather, this is the place to be.
North of Natal about 60 km is Maracajau, a popular seaside resort. There are several new developments here, including Manoa Park, a resort and housing complex. Heading in the other direction are several popular cities and towns for developers and investors. About 80 km south of Natal is Pipa, a popular place for foreigners to settle down. A little farther up the coast are Ponta Negra and Pirangi do Norte, two beaches that are popular with Europeans and have multiple developments under construction.
Rio Grande do Norte is not necessarily the easiest place to get to, but it will be fairly soon. Natal is approximately 2600 km from Sau Paolo, and the main airport serving the area is located in Parnamirim, a suburb of the city. Airport Augusto Severo (NAT) is located about 15 km. south of downtown Natal, and there are flights daily to Salvador, Fortaleza and Sao Paulo. There are also international flights in and out of the airport with several charters flying weekly to European Cities. There is a new airport under construction to the west of the city in Sao Goncolo do Amarante, scheduled to open in late 2009 or 2010. Anticipating the future tourist and cargo traffic for this idyllic area, it is slated to be the largest airport in Latin America.
